After a four-year hiatus, the Nehalem Bay Crab Derby is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Nehalem Bay Crab Derby has become one of the premier charity events on the Oregon Coast and The Jetty Fishery is more than happy to be sponsoring the event this year. The Derby is dedicated to local charities that serve the greater good of both visitors and residents of our coastal communities and will be held this year on Sunday, June 12, 2011.
Previous year’s derby’s have raised over $55,000 for charity, and have been attended by over 11,000 visitors. Each year we expect the largest turnout with a conservative participation outlook of: 1,200 daily visitors, a wide assortment of vendor booths, and over 300 donated raffle/auction items to combine for a substantial contribution to our charities.
As many of you may recall, 26 tagged crabs are released into the Nehalem Bay at the beginning of each day of the Derby. The tags correlate to prizes such as the grand prize of $1000 each day, donated by the owners of Kelly’s Brighton Marina and The Jetty Fishery, to vendor donated items such as sporting goods, fishing equipment, gift certificates good for meals and accommodations, and locally created artwork.
The 2011 Derby dates are June 11th and 12th, chosen to coincide with the yearly Free Fishing Weekend, when no license for crabbing, clamming or fishing is required. This year we hope to add new activities to the Derby such as a Children’s Art Competition, Clam and Oyster Walk, more extensive Beer & Wine garden, and local farmer’s market section.
All proceeds of the event are donated to theReinhart Clinic and Wildlife Center of the North Coast, both of whom provide educational exhibits at The Derby as well as helpful services such as the Reinhart Clinic’s free blood pressure screening and the Wildlife Center’s up-close and personal exposure to rescued wild animals such as several species of owls and eagles.
We ask you to please seriously consider any donation of your time, merchandise, or money you can in support of this great cause! If you are interested in having a booth at the Derby we are more than glad to give you specifics via telephone or email listed below.
We greatly appreciate any questions, concerns, or suggestions you might have about the Nehalem Bay Crab Derby and are always available to talk with you on any issues. Please don’t hesitate to call or email our event coordinator, Arlette Black, at 503-801-7507, or The Jetty Fishery at 503-368-5746 or 1-800-821-7697, or email info@jettyfishery.com.
